Consulate General of Argentina in Shanghai hosts dance event
The Consulate General of Argentina in Shanghai held an event earlier this month to commemorate World Tango Day. The musical and dance event was organized by the consulate for the third consecutive year.
During the night, Shanghai-based dance school Tango Bang held a tango open class for participants, while tango instructors from Tango Bang and fellow dance studio TangoGo performed together. This was followed with a live performance by The Gardel Trio and Argentine singer Josefina Rozenwasser.
Tango is celebrated worldwide on December 11, World Tango Day. The occasion marks the birthday of French Argentine singer and songwriter Carlos Gardel, the most prominent figure in the history of tango, and Julio de Caro, another distinguished Argentine composer in the tango genre.
Tango is a partner dance that originated in the 1880s along the River Plate, the border between Argentina and Uruguay. It is both a musical genre and a dance form that was influenced by various music brought over by European and African immigrants. Tango then spread to the rest of the world throughout the 20th century.
As a dance genre, tango has evolved into a "sexy" dance requiring male and female participants to embrace each other closely while pantomiming intimate and dramatic gesticulations. Enrique Santos Discépolo, one of tango's most renowned poets, defined tango as "a sad thought that is danced."
In 2009, tango was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list following a joint proposal by Argentina and Uruguay.
