Consulate of Argentina in Shanghai celebrates dance and music

The Consulate of Argentina in Shanghai held an event for the fourth consecutive year to commemorate World Tango Day. Tango is celebrated worldwide every December 11, which marks the birthday of singer and songwriter Carlos Gardel and composer Julio de Caro, the two most-prominent figures in the history of tango.

The celebration was unveiled with a live concert performed by Shanghai-based band The Gardel Trio and Argentine singer Daniela Bessia while instructors from local studios TangoBang and TangoGo performed together. This was followed by free teaching sessions amid sampling of Argentinian wine and pastries.

Tango is a partner dance that originated in the late 19th century in Argentina. As both a musical genre and a dance form, tango was influenced by various music brought over by European cultures.

The dance originated in lower-class districts of Buenos Aires. In the early years of the 20th century, dancers and orchestras from Buenos Aires traveled to Europe, where Tango spread to the rest of the world.

"Tango is growing very fast here, especially in Shanghai," Antonio Martin Rivolta, Consul General of Argentina in Shanghai, told the Global Times.

Rivolta believes Shanghai is a very international city opening to the world and receiving different aspects of cultural. Like Buenos Aires, Shanghai is also a port city with residents from all over the world listening to mixed dancing and music.

"The schools of tango are growing. People want to take classes and study the history, and through that they will know Argentina," Rivolta said.
